centrotherm’s centaurus technology is based on a PERC cell structure with rear side passivation through a dielectric layer and a local aluminum back-surface field (Al-LBSF). The improved cell structure significantly reduces the recombination losses on the solar cell rear side by minimizing the contact area between the silicone and the contact metal without incurring a significant impact on the contact resistance.
centaurus solar cells already reach average cell efficiencies of 19.8% and peak results of 20.3% not only in the laboratory, but also in mass production with an installed and tested production capacity of more than 500 MW.
Three additional production steps are required to implement the centaurus technology into the solar cell manufacturing process: the wet-chemical smoothing of the textured rear side and the formation and partial opening of the dielectric layer. On the other hand, one process step can be omitted that is necessary in conventional solar cell technology. The entire process sequence is carried out with commonplace production equipment and metallization is achieved using proven screen printing technology. Moreover, centaurus solar cells are also perfect fits for installation into conventional solar modules.
